Christian Resolution for 2026 (Jeff Unsworth)
Galatians 3:27 If you are in Christ, put on Christ.
It means that those who have committed their lives to Christ through faith have taken on Christ’s values and characteristics.
Micah 6:8
The book of Micah, a minor prophet in the Old Testament, contains teaching relating to social justice, the warning of the consequences of immorality and calling for repentance.
Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
This short article will look into the significance and relevance of Micah 6:8, as well as practical ways to apply these teachings in the society in which we live.
Act Justly
The Hebrew word for ‘justice’ in this passage, “mishpat”, conveys the idea of righteousness, fairness, and impartiality. In a just society, everyone should have equal access to resources, rights, and opportunities, irrespective of social status, race, or creed. By actively promoting justice and opposing injustice, we reflect God’s character and emulate His compassionate nature.
One can accomplish this by standing up for marginalized communities, promoting ethical business practices, and pursuing integrity in personal and professional relationships.
Love Mercy
The word ‘mercy’ in Micah 6:8 is translated from the Hebrew word “chesed”, which implies loving-kindness, compassion, and loyalty.
In a world where we encounter selfishness and indifference, practicing “chesed” means that one goes above and beyond, for the well-being of others, looking out for the interest of others.
Phil 2:4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
It involves extending forgiveness, showing empathy, and being generous with our time, talents, and resources. “Chesed” is the foundation of strong relationships, healthy communities, and a thriving society.
Whilst Jesus taught, when asked, “Who is my brother?” said, “He who does the will of My Father”. There is a sense in which loving mercy should be extended to all men, if we are to emulate our Father in heaven.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believed in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Verses like Micah 6:8 emphasize the importance of acting justly and loving mercy.
Christians, because they have received God’s grace and forgiveness, they too should extend that same grace to others. However, this does not mean condoning sin:
While showing mercy, it’s important to still uphold ethical standards and address harmful behaviours when necessary.
Walk Humbly
The phrase ‘walk humbly with your God’ emphasizes the importance of humility in our relationship with God and others. Humility is not putting oneself down or denying one’s worth; rather, it is recognizing our dependence on God and acknowledging the value of others.
By walking humbly, we foster an attitude of teachability, openness, and service, allowing us to learn from and uplift those around us.
How one can live out the qualities highlighted in Micah 6:8
Educate oneself.
Gaining knowledge about social issues is the first step towards promoting justice, practicing mercy, and demonstrating humility.
Reading, listening to talks, and engaging in conversations that challenge your understanding of the world. Listening to other people’s ideas and perspectives on different aspects of life.
Standing for Justice
Identify injustices in your community or around the world and take action. Action, such as writing letters to local representatives, volunteering at organizations that combat inequality, and participate in peaceful protests. Using your voice and influence to amplify the voices of those who are marginalized, oppressed, or silenced.
Practice Mercy
Show kindness and compassion in everyday interactions. Offer a listening ear, extend forgiveness to the repentant, and give generously to those in need. Embrace opportunities to serve others, whether by volunteering at a charity shop, donating to a local food bank, or mentoring a young person or joining a local residents group. Generally, just getting involved with people.
Embrace Humility
Work on your own humility by acknowledging your limitations and seeking wisdom from others. Engage in self-reflection and invite constructive feedback from trusted friends and mentors. Practice to be a good listener and encourage others.
Conclusion
Micah 6:8 outlines a powerful and enduring call to action for people of faith and conscience. By embracing the principles of justice, mercy, and humility, we can contribute to a more compassionate, equitable, and thriving world. At the same time, bring glory to God by emulating our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Let us strive to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God, becoming agents for change in our world.
